Buying Hermès without the boutique
Hermès does not sell a Birkin or a Kelly to a walk-in customer. Boutique allocation depends on an established purchase history, and there is no list you can join. The secondary market is not an alternative route to the same price — it is the only route to the bag at all for most buyers, and prices reflect that.
What that means practically: you are buying on condition, colour, leather and hardware, and the spread between a well-kept bag and a tired one is enormous. That is where the condition report earns its keep.
What to check on a pre-owned Hermès bag
- Blind stamp — the date and atelier code, checked for consistency with the hardware and leather.
- Stitching — Hermès saddle stitch is hand-done and slightly irregular. Machine-perfect stitching is a warning sign.
- Corners and base — the first place wear shows. Reported honestly, with photographs.
- Hardware — plating wear, replaced feet, and whether the piece has been refurbished.
- Exotic skins — CITES restrictions apply on some materials and can prevent lawful import into certain countries. Where a piece is affected, the listing says so. See buying from overseas.
Buying from us
- 14 days to cancel from delivery, no reason needed, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. See our terms for the returns condition.
- Certificate of Authenticity with every piece, and a written condition report before you buy.
- Fully insured, signed-for delivery — £25 UK, £75 plus 2.5% internationally.
