Buying Zenith pre-owned
Zenith is the connoisseur’s value play. El Primero is one of the genuinely significant automatic chronograph movements — high beat, in-house, in production since 1969 — and the brand carries none of the price premium that name recognition brings to its neighbours. On the secondary market that gap widens further.
The practical caution is servicing. El Primero runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, and a high-beat chronograph is not a cheap movement to put right. Buy on service history where you can.
What to check
- Service history — the most important item on any El Primero, given movement complexity and cost.
- Chronograph function — pushers, reset to zero and sub-dial alignment are checked and reported.
- Movement reference — El Primero versus a supplied calibre changes both value and running cost.
- Case and bezel finishing — refinishing is disclosed where identified.
- Water resistance — never warranted on a pre-owned watch unless pressure tested and stated.
