The Breitling Navitimer: aviation’s longest-running chronograph

The Breitling Navitimer has been in continuous production since 1952, which makes it one of the very few watches that can claim a genuinely unbroken line back to the age of propeller aviation. Its trademark is the circular slide rule around the dial, a working flight computer that let pilots calculate fuel burn, climb rate and airspeed conversions in the cockpit. Seventy years on it is still the most recognisable pilot chronograph made, and the pre-owned market is where Breitling collecting gets interesting.

A dial that does maths

What sets the Navitimer apart from every other chronograph is that busy bidirectional bezel scale. It looks ornamental now but it was a serious tool, adopted by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association as its official watch. The modern B01 keeps the look honest while running Breitling own in-house chronograph movement — a proper manufacture calibre rather than a bought-in module.

The vintage-flavoured and the space-bound

Earlier Navitimers carry a warmer, more compressed dial that many collectors prefer to the modern piece, and they wear smaller on the wrist. Then there is the Cosmonaute, the 24-hour variant that Scott Carpenter took into orbit in 1962 — the first Swiss wristwatch worn in space. Its dial runs a full day around the clock rather than twelve hours, a quiet reminder of how far this watch has actually travelled.

Where to find them

A Navitimer is a watch to buy on condition and dial, and the choice between a crisp modern B01 and a softer vintage piece is really a choice about how you want it to wear.
