Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s most famous piece of jewellery cost almost nothing and sold for a fortune. Her triple-strand pearls were costume, not real — and at Sotheby’s 1996 estate sale they fetched $211,500 against a $500–700 estimate. It is the neatest summary of her style there is: taste and proportion mattered more to her than carat weight, and the market eventually paid for the taste.

Were Jackie’s pearls real?
No, and that is the point. The pearls she wore constantly in the White House years were a simulated three-strand necklace by the American costume jeweller Kenneth Jay Lane. She understood that a strong, simple idea worn with confidence beats a nervous display of expensive stones. When the Sotheby’s sale of her estate came in April 1996, Lot 454 — those faux pearls, pictured with a young John F. Kennedy Jr. tugging at them — sold to the Franklin Mint for $211,500. The necklace now lives in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
What real jewellery did she wear?
Plenty, but always with restraint. She favoured Van Cleef & Arpels — a pair of the house’s berry-cluster earrings among them — and a slim Cartier Tank watch that rarely left her wrist. Her rule was consistency: a few pieces, worn so often they became part of her, rather than a rotating jewellery box. It is a lesson in editing that reads as thoroughly modern.

What does the Jackie look cost today?
The auction record is a historical one-off; the wearable version is far more attainable. Below, the 1996 result sits next to Chrono6538 indicative guide ranges for the kind of vintage costume-pearl pieces that recreate the look now.

Why it still matters for a collector
Jackie’s example is the most useful one in this whole field: the impact of jewellery comes from how it is worn, not what it cost. A well-chosen vintage Chanel pearl piece, worn with her kind of consistency, does more than a drawer of neglected gold. If you want to build that look, start with one good pearl necklace and wear it until it is yours. Browse pearl and vintage pieces in our Chrono6538 fine jewellery selection →
