How Much Is a Pre-Owned Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra Worth? (UK Guide, 2026)

A Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra is one of those pieces a lady tends to buy for herself and then never take off — the little clover settles at the throat or the wrist and quietly becomes part of how she dresses, and how she thinks about luck. It is also one of the most reliably wearable ways into serious jewellery: a vintage five-motif bracelet in gold and hardstone sits at roughly £3,400 to £4,600 on the pre-owned market as of July 2026, against the £4,750 the mother-of-pearl version costs new.

That is the short answer. The longer one depends entirely on which Alhambra you mean, because the collection spans a £900 pendant and a £14,000 sautoir, and the two are worlds apart.

Why does the Alhambra hold its place?

Van Cleef & Arpels created the first Alhambra long necklace in 1968 — twenty clover-shaped motifs in softly creased yellow gold, edged with tiny gold beads. The four-leaf clover was chosen as a talisman of luck, love, health and fortune; Jacques Arpels used to pick real four-leaf clovers in his garden and hand them to staff as good-luck charms, and the name nods to the quatrefoil geometry of the Alhambra palace in Granada. Nearly sixty years on it still reads as quiet good taste rather than a logo, which is exactly why it has never really dated.

It has always been worn by ladies with their own point of view. Grace Kelly wore Alhambra long necklaces through the 1970s; Françoise Hardy made it part of her cool, unfussed Paris uniform in the same decade.

How much is a pre-owned Alhambra worth in 2026?

These are guide ranges from the wider pre-owned market — dealer and marketplace asking prices in GBP, as of July 2026, segmented by configuration because a diamond piece can cost three times its hardstone twin. They are not Chrono6538’s own prices: we sell authenticated, checked pieces at a premium to the bare private-market floor. This is a description of how the pieces have held their value, not investment advice.

Piece & configuration Pre-owned guide range (GBP) New retail (for context)
Sweet Alhambra single-motif pendant, mother-of-pearl (entry) £850 – £1,600 —
Vintage pendant, single motif, gold + hardstone (onyx/MOP/carnelian) £2,300 – £3,000 from £2,720
Vintage pendant, white/rose gold + diamond £3,900 – £5,000 £3,700+
Vintage bracelet, 5 motifs, gold + hardstone £3,400 – £4,600 £4,750
Vintage bracelet, 5 motifs, guilloché gold (no stone) £5,500 – £6,500 —
Vintage bracelet, 5 motifs, diamond pavé £9,000 – £13,000 £15,000
Vintage necklace, 10 motifs, mother-of-pearl / onyx £6,500 – £8,500 £9,050
Vintage long necklace, 20 motifs, gold + mother-of-pearl £11,000 – £14,000 £17,600

The pattern is clear: mother-of-pearl and onyx pieces settle a little below current retail, while diamond versions hold a large premium and the discontinued stones can climb above what they cost new.

Sweet, Vintage or Magic — which suits you?

The collection comes in three sizes, and choosing between them is really a question of how you want it to feel. Sweet Alhambra uses a tiny nine-and-a-half-millimetre motif; it is the accessible tier, delicate and easy to layer, and the natural first piece. Vintage Alhambra, at roughly fifteen millimetres, is the version most people mean by “the Alhambra” and the heart of the resale market. Magic Alhambra is larger still and mixes motif sizes within a single piece — more presence, and a clear premium over Vintage. If you are buying one thing to keep, the Vintage five-motif bracelet or ten-motif necklace is the classic answer.

Do the rarer stones cost more?

Yes, and it is worth knowing which. Turquoise Alhambra was discontinued and, in good condition, can sell above its original price. Grey mother-of-pearl, lacquered letterwood and certain tiger’s-eye and carnelian holiday editions are genuinely scarce and trade at collector levels. If you fall for one of these, judge condition carefully — the stones and lacquer are the fragile part — and expect to pay for rarity rather than for gold weight.

Where to buy a pre-owned Alhambra

Buy the piece, and buy the reassurance. An Alhambra is widely copied, so the things that matter are the hallmark, the Van Cleef & Arpels signature and serial, the condition of the stones, and ideally the box and papers — absence of papers typically softens the price and the eventual resale. Chrono6538 authenticates every piece it sells, which is the difference between a bare private-market figure and something you can wear without a second thought: authenticated, guaranteed, and yours to love.
