How Much Is a Pre-Owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Worth? (UK, 2026)

A pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak has, for most of the last decade, cost more used than it did new — the clearest sign that this is a watch the market treats as a genuine store of value rather than a depreciating luxury. As of July 2026, a classic steel Royal Oak in 41mm sits in the region of £24,000–£34,000 on the wider pre-owned market, with the 37mm and the thin “Jumbo” sitting either side of that.

The Royal Oak is the watch that invented the luxury steel sports category. When Audemars Piguet launched it in 1972 at a price higher than many gold watches of the day, it was a gamble; today it underpins the brand. If you are weighing one up on the used market, here is what the money actually buys, segmented by size and metal so you are not comparing a steel 15400 against a gold Jumbo.

How much is a pre-owned Royal Oak worth in 2026?

Price is driven far more by reference and metal than by age. The figures below are indicative wider-market asking prices as of July 2026, drawn from UK and international dealer listings (Watchfinder, Chrono24, WatchCharts). They are open-market floors, not Chrono6538’s prices — we sell fully authenticated, checked and guaranteed examples at a premium to the bare private-market figure.

Why does the steel model cost more than a gold one used to?

Supply. Audemars Piguet is independent and makes only around 50,000 watches a year across the whole brand, and the steel Royal Oak is the most requested single line. For years demand outran supply, waiting lists ran into years at retail, and the grey market carried a heavy premium. That premium has cooled from the 2022 peak but never collapsed: a steel 15400 that retailed near £18,000 still trades comfortably above that pre-owned. The gold references, ironically, sit closer to their original retail because fewer buyers chase them.

Which reference should you actually buy?

For most buyers the 15400 is the sweet spot: full 41mm presence, the 3120 movement, and the lowest entry to a genuine steel Royal Oak. The 15500 is the newer choice if you want the updated 4302 calibre and a subtly cleaner dial. The 15202 Jumbo is the purist’s watch — 8.1mm thin, closest to the 1972 original — and it is priced accordingly. The 37mm 15450 wears beautifully on a smaller wrist and is worth a look if 41mm feels too much. Buy the best condition you can, and insist on box and papers: a full set makes a real difference to both price and future resale.

Has the Royal Oak held its value?

Historically, yes — better than almost any watch outside a handful of Patek and Rolex references. A steel Royal Oak bought at retail a decade ago is worth materially more today, and even after the 2022–2024 market correction the classic steel references have stayed above retail. That said, this is a description of how the watch has behaved, not a forecast: values can and do fall, secondary prices are volatile, and none of this is investment advice. Buy a Royal Oak because you want to wear one of the most important designs in modern watchmaking — the value retention is a bonus, not the reason.

Buying a Royal Oak with confidence

Because steel Royal Oaks command a premium, they are among the most faithfully replicated watches on the market, so provenance matters more here than almost anywhere. Every Audemars Piguet Royal Oak we handle is independently authenticated, checked and guaranteed before sale, with condition and set honestly described. See our current Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore stock, and if the exact reference you want isn’t listed, ask — we source to order.
