Choose a Rolex and, as often as not, you are really choosing between two bracelets. The Oyster and the Jubilee have carried the brand’s watches for the best part of a century, and though they bolt to the same cases, they give a watch two quite different personalities. Get the bracelet right and the watch feels like yours; get it wrong and something never quite settles. Here is how the two differ and how to pick between them.

What is the Jubilee bracelet?
The Jubilee was introduced in 1945 for the Datejust, and it was designed to be dressy. It is made of five pieces of metal per link, with a row of smaller polished centre links running down the middle, and that construction does two things: it makes the bracelet more supple and comfortable, flowing around the wrist, and it gives it a more refined, jewellery-like look thanks to all that extra polished detail. It is the bracelet that dresses a watch up. On a Datejust in particular it is the classic choice, and its combination of comfort and elegance wins a lot of people over the moment they try it.
What is the Oyster bracelet?
The Oyster is the sportier of the two: three broad, flat links per row, with a cleaner and more robust look. It reads as tool-like and modern, sits flatter on the wrist, and is the bracelet you find on the sports models, the divers and the everyday steel Rolexes. Where the Jubilee is about suppleness and shine, the Oyster is about strength and simplicity. It also tends to feel a little more substantial, which suits a larger sports watch and a more casual wardrobe.

How do they wear differently?
On the wrist the Jubilee feels softer and more fluid, draping around the wrist and catching the light with its polished centre links; it flatters a dress watch and a suit. The Oyster feels flatter and firmer, more of a single solid band; it suits a sports watch, a rolled sleeve and a weekend. Neither is more comfortable in absolute terms, but they distribute their comfort differently, and the only real way to know which you prefer is to feel both. Fit and clasp matter as much as the link style: look for a bracelet with good micro-adjustment so the watch sits just right whatever the weather.
Which should you choose?
If you want your Rolex to lean dressy and refined, and you like a little sparkle and a supple feel, the Jubilee is your bracelet. If you want it to lean sporty, robust and understated, choose the Oyster. Many collectors end up with one of each for exactly that reason. There is no wrong answer, only the character you want the watch to have.
